Filipino Culture is known for several different things like hospitality and their hard working ethics, but what largely defines it is the community built upon food. It is highly probable that you’ll walk into a traditional Filipino household and be asked, “Kumain ka na ba? (Have you eaten yet?)”. Regardless of the answer, you’ll find yourself seated at the dinner table with the rest of the family, getting ready to say grace before digging in. Part of this culinary culture that many aren’t aware of, is the unique desserts and sweets that complement the savory palate of Filipino Dishes.

Kamusta?(How are You?)

Food is just one of the many ways that Filipinos show hospitality, but it is a key component to their culture.

With vibrant eye-catching colors and grungy textures, this concept aims to attract the bright-eyed youth of Virginia Beach, VA who will carry on Filipino traditions. Buko Jun Bakery prides itself in finding new ways to teach the large community of Filipino youth in the area about different aspects of their culture.

Take a Closer Look!

The overall aesthetic takes inspiration from Filipino Jeepneys which are refurbished American military jeeps covered in garish, but incredible artwork. Not only is this vehicle a major mode of transportation in the Philippines, but it is a metaphor for the Filipino people themselves.

Soul food

Although they were under colonial rule by the Spanish, Japanese and Americans for hundreds of years, these influences have amalgamated together to create a beautifully cheerful people.

The other deliverable for this project included a menu system that features many of the desserts in the cookbook and more. The menu continues with the same aesthetic of the colorful jeepneys while focusing more on warm colors to convey the feelings Filipino hospitality.
